There is a beech wood insert inside the bear's body that has been specifically developed for Steiff by the experts of incense smokers from the Erz mountains in Germany.  

To enable the bear to smoke there is a cavity inside the bear in which an incense cone is lit.  The air hole in the pipe enables the incense smoke to flow from the bear into the room.

Not very "PC" but this is the first teddy bear that can smoke!  Don't worry folks, the smoke from his pipe is fragrant incense.  This lovely shepherd bear is made of a wavy, sand-coloured mohair and is wearing a warm cape made from mottled wool felt.  His large, dark green brimmed hat, handmade by a German hat maker, is also made from wool felt.  His pointed shepherd shovel and the wooden pipe that he holds in his mouth add "character".    This sweet-smelling fellow is accompanied by a green-eyed lamb made from soft, thick alpaca.  Both are set aloft a lacquered beech wood stand.
