"Steiff - Button in Ear"
 
This is a trademark that has come to be synonymous with toys of the very highest quality.  For over a century, "Button in Ear" has stood for outstanding design, high product quality and exceptional craftsmanship.
 
Since 2000, limited editions have featured gold-plated buttons.  Over the course of time, many different buttons have been used with various styles overlapping, meaning that older models continued to be used while new ones had already been introduced.  Because of this, the button does not indicate an exact date, but does allow collectors to determine the period in which items are produced.
  
The "Steiff - Button in Ear" Tag
 
Every single Steiff creation can be distinguished from the rest of the Steiff family by means of its special tag.  This tag is the distinctive mark of a genuine Steiff product, representing the Margarete Steiff GmbH seal of quality and is your guarantee of compliance with European safety requirements for toys (CE).
 

White/Red Tag - Limited Editions
 
Used for limited editions including items that are only available in certain countries.  When limited to a specific number made, the back of the tag also features the number made (2,000 Stck in the example), the individual number (00783 of the 2,000), the year of issue (2002) and the "EAN" or product code (671197).
 

White/Black Tag - Limited Edition Replicas
 
The white tag again indicates a limited edition, however items with black writing on the tag are recreations of old Steiff products and designated as replicas.  On the back of the tag is the limited number made (7,000 Stck in the example), the individual number (03952 of the 7,000), the year of issue (2002) and the "EAN" or product code (404009).
 

Yellow/Red Tag - Unlimited Items
 
This tag is used for unlimited items in the product range.  The Steiff logo is printed on the front. On the back, you can find the EAN (or product code - 660740 in this example) and information on the materials used.
